NBA legend Michael Jordan, has teamed up with three-time Daytona 500 winner Denny Hamlin to form a new racing team with Bubba Wallace signed on as a driver....
Jordan who purchased a charter from Germain Racing will become the first Black majority owner of a full-time Nascar team since Wendall Scott owned and raced his car back in the 1970s. The new team set to start in 2021 will add to Jordan's already growing sports portfolio, Jordan, already own's 70% of the Charlotte Hornets and according to Forbes is estimated as the richest athlete on the planet with a net worth of $1.6 billion.
Bubba Wallace, currently the only Black driver in Nascar, rose to prominence on the Nascar circuit this year when members of the racing team Richard Petty Motorsports discovered a noose hanging from a garage assigned to the driver at the Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama.
It was later identified by the FBI that the item had been hanging in the garage since last year.
Nascar has for some time struggled with diversity, declining ratings and attendance for a decade and earlier this year, Jordan pledged to donate $100 million over 10 years to groups "dedicated to ensuring racial equality, social justice and greater access to education and as the " Black Lives Matter" movement continue to spread throughout the sports world now seems the most opportune moment for Jordan a lifelong fan of the sport to get a foothold.
For the remainder of the 2020 season Hamlin will continue to drive the No. 11 car for Joe Gibbs Racing, with whom he has won 43 races in 15 seasons.
