A testament to the past, designed for today. The new A/W19, Gieves & Hawkes’ ready-to-wear collection is unashamedly luxurious, masculine and versatile; presenting modern British style at its finest ...

Contemporary tailored outerwear, suiting and separates mix refined fabrics with polished designs, rich colours and sophisticated textures throughout.

In contrast to the relaxed looks and lightweight layers of last season, this collection sees a strong return to tailoring; with emphasis on the house’s timeless cut and silhouette. Elegant suits form the backbone of the collection, and mix the conventional navies and greys of winter with softly flecked or checked fabrics.

This story continues through the collection’s separates and outerwear. Whether a tweed sports coat or a navy blazer with a mottled overcheck, jackets are cut in substantial fabrics and sophisticated colours. Signature outerwear designs include a pair of ‘split-raglan’ coats, which are made with half-raglan sleeves that slip-on easily over tailoring. In exclusive fabrics these make a sharp impression layered over a dark suit. There’s also a handsome ink blue greatcoat cut from double-faced wool, woven expressly for Gieves & Hawkes. This features a dramatic stand-and-fall collar and belted back, and even has the house’s unique military ribbon jacquard woven through its interior.

A number of suits are available as separate jackets and trousers, to help customers to find their perfect pairing. All the house’s tailoring features superior half-canvas construction, for a flattering fit through the chest and waist. Of course, the collection isn’t solely formal in its outlook. Casual pieces include a nappa leather blouson in burgundy, which pairs comfortably with slim-fit moleskin chinos or flannel trousers. There’s also a pair of versatile raincoats in crimson and navy, finished with sealed seams and fly-fronts. Each is a go-to weather-resistant winter coat.

Throughout, tailored pieces are mixed with fine merino rollnecks, as well as softly textured shirts in brushed cotton or needlecord. Ties are equally textural for a modern look. For something slightly different, Gieves & Hawkes is also offering a range of fine-gauge knitted mocknecks, designed to wear under suits or jackets. Chunkier knits come in charcoal or ginger colours in a precious mix of wool and alpaca.

Distinguished evening wear is another Gieves & Hawkes signature. For the party season, alongside timeless black and midnight blue dinner suits, the house is offering three statement making evening jackets. The first two are both cut from English silk jacquard; one in a tonal navy pattern with peaked lapels, the other in a bronze-coloured herringbone pattern with a smooth shawl collar. A timeless black velvet dinner jacket with jetted pockets and smoked mother-of-pearl buttons completes the trio.

The collection is united by the consistent reinterpretation of Gieves & Hawkes’s history. Subtle naval and military design touches run throughout, while tailored pieces are elegant, wearable and quintessentially British. Superior materials and traditional tailoring techniques yield a collection that feels reassuringly robust to wear.
