COAST TO COAST: INTRODUCING THE SS19 RIVIERA COLLECTION

Put a spring in your step – and your wardrobe – with this SS19 collection from luxury luggage specialists "Globe Trotter".

Inspired by the pastel hues and retro glamour of the Mediterranean coastline, the new Riviera collection is one of Globe-Trotter’s most striking to date. Here, Globe-Trotter designer Charlotte Seddon takes us behind the scenes of the new range…

The Riviera collection marks a colourful new direction for Globe-Trotter. Ice-cream shades of pink, lemon and blue are plastered in stripes and block colours on the signature suitcase and vanity cases, while complementary leather bags and accessories complete the look. Spring-summer also sees the launch of a new statement Miniature Case, which imitates the iconic Globe-Trotter suitcase design on a smaller, functionable scale.

"The collection started from two points," explains Charlotte Seddon, Globe-Trotter’s senior designer. "First of all we wanted to bring out a smaller, cross-body bag; essentially a cute everyday bag that was still recognisably Globe-Trotter. At the same time, being a spring-summer launch, we wanted to have a proper summer story – something fun and playful. The stripes came from looking at images of the Riviera – primarily the stripes you find on sun loungers, parasols and ice cream. We kept the colour palette very tight in pink, yellow and blue with ivory white leather that really pops"

When it came to putting together a mood board for the collection, the Globe-Trotter design team were inspired by American photographer Slim Aarons, whose work centred around the beautiful people of Hollywood in the 1950s and 60s. Jude Law’s breakout film, The Talented Mr Ripley, also sprang to mind, with its sun-drenched, sumptuous setting along Italy’s breathtaking Amalfi coast.

The new stripes motif in retro pastel shades was specially screen-printed onto the fibreboard by an independent company located close to Globe-Trotter’s Hertfordshire headquarters. As well as being printed on the signature suitcases, the stripes also make an appearance on the new cross-body bag and a brand-new line of detachable shoulder straps, which can be affixed to other Globe-Trotter cases.

Another new addition to the Globe-Trotter family is an eye-catching quartet of beautifully made stickers. Partially inspired by the spring-summer 2017 collection – where Globe-Trotter recreated the sticker-lined suitcase belonging to former BOAC stewardess, Hillary Farish – the new designs depict four iconic locations: Paris, London, Hawaii and Los Angeles. ‘They’re like modern versions of the old travel stickers,’ Charlotte explains. ‘They can go on any suitcase or even passport holders and phone cases – anything really!’ This isn’t a one-off launch, but rather the start of a new core collection, with new designs and cities coming soon. After all, fans of Globe-Trotter have been decorating their cases with stickers and patches for years, so the introduction of Globe-Trotter-branded stickers has been a long time coming. ‘It makes sense, we’re a travel company at the end of the day,’ Seddon commented. ‘The launch also happens to work really well with the Riviera collection. With Globe-Trotter, we always come back to travel. Where is the Globe-Trotter customer going? This season it’s the Riviera – next season, who knows!’
